This week, following the Easter break, we move from the sombre mood of Good Friday to the transformative joy of the Resurrection; a journey that sits at the very heart of our faith and purpose as a learning community. The message of Easter is one of profound, selfless sacrifice. Christ’s sacrifice for our sins was the ultimate act of ‘contribution’ to humanity; He gave of Himself completely to offer us a path toward grace and renewal. This divine example provides a powerful lens through which we view our annual theme of being ‘Called to Contribute’. 

Contribution is not merely about fulfilling a duty or completing a task. It is an invitation to mirror the selflessness we see in the Easter story. Just as Christ served others, we are called to use our unique gifts, our time, our ideas and our compassion to build up those around us. As we enter the 50-day season of Easter, we’re encouraged to honour the gift of Christ’s death and resurrection through our service to one another.

My thanks to students, staff and families for your contributions to the success of Term 1. We are exceptionally proud of students whose commitment to learning, stewardship of our culture and engagement with school life continue to underpin our community. It’s also been fabulous to have high levels of parent involvement with College life; your presence at events like Cabaret, Athletics and Swimming Carnivals, Community Breakfasts, Stay and Plays, Grandparents Day, celebratory assemblies, weekend and evening sport and Year 12 Formal adds a richness to these events that is so highly valued by your children. My thanks again to staff whose commitment to students, their families and each other enables all these opportunities to be possible. As I say often, the quality of a school cannot exceed the quality of its staff.

I hope the upcoming term break provides you all an opportunity to spend quality time with family and friends.

Stage 2 CAD CAM and Material Solutions Excursion

Stage 2 CAD CAM and Material Solutions classes recently visited ANFF-SA’s Testlab at Adelaide University’s Mawson Lakes campus for an excursion on destructive material testing. ANFF-SA is a world-class micro and nanofabrication open-access facility co-located at Adelaide and Flinders Universities.

Students brought various timber and 3D-printed samples to test. Guided by ANFF-SA Additive Manufacturing Technologist, Daniel Williams, they conducted tensile, flexural and impact testing using an MTS electromechanical testing system and impact testing equipment.

Thank you to Mr Zankov and Mr Walsh for accompanying the students. We wish both classes all the best as they evaluate their structural integrity results while completing their Assessment Type 3 assignments.

Year 11 Outdoor Experiences

Year 11 Students had an incredibly adventurous 2 days on their Outdoor Experience this week. The rain put a dampener, but students embraced the challenge of the activities with enthusiasm and stepped outside of their comfort zones!

The first day at West Beach was a great success, with students conquering the Mega Climb with confidence. Most were brave enough to take the 20m Leap of Faith back to the ground! Students also worked together in teams on the beach to create rafts from PVC piping, inner tubes and ropes. The determination to prove that their rafts could float and be paddled a distance, was enough to get students in the water with lots of laughs. 

Sadly the Mega Climb and Raft Building on the second day at West Beach was too risky with the surrounding storms and lightning. Students were lucky enough to be transported to West Lakes to see a movie and explore the shops.

On the other side of town, students explored the City of Adelaide. Together with a map and series of clues, the students visited many famous sites of Adelaide and learnt more about our city, completing tasks and answering questions. They also learned about teamwork alongside the staff and peers, enhancing connections and gathering experiences to remember.

Senior Arts Excursions

Creative students have had an immersive week on the professional world through three unique experiences:

DesignInc Studio Visit: Year 10s visited DesignInc in Adelaide, made possible by Simon Best, the architect behind our Mallee and Catford buildings. Students had a Q&A session to learn about how professional creative projects are brought to life. 

Anatomical Drawing Workshop: Year 12s participated in a skulls and bones workshop at the Art Gallery of South Australia.  Students were challenged to focus on what they see, studying sculptures by Rodin and Carmody.

SACE Art Show: Senior Art classes headed into the city to view the SACE Art Show. This excursion showcased the high-level technical skill and creative freedom expected in Year 12, inspiring students in their own independent projects.

Year 11 Outdoor Education Para Wirra Excursion

Year 11 Outdoor Education students recently travelled to Para Wirra Conservation Park. After undertaking pre-learning on sustainability and park management, students had the great opportunity to speak with a park ranger and ask questions.

Students challenged themselves and their orienteering abilities by completing a 6km course. It was awesome to see them applying navigation strategies they learned in class to find their way. Overall, it was a fantastic day of putting their classroom learning into action.

Year 10 German

Year 10 German students have been busy perfecting their speaking skills while enjoying a delicious cultural treat: Waffeln! In Germany, baking waffles is a cherished Sunday tradition during Kaffee und Kuchen (coffee and cake) with family. It was a wonderful way for the class to practice their language skills while experiencing a real taste of German life.

Year 8 Chinese Food Activity

Year 8 Chinese students had a blast tasting authentic Chinese dishes as part of their unit on food.

The classroom was transformed into a Chinese restaurant as students practised their language skills by using the target language to order food and interact with their teachers. This hands-on experience allowed students to apply their vocabulary in a real-world setting, from discussing flavours and ingredients to mastering the etiquette of a traditional Chinese meal.

It was a fantastic day of learning, laughter and delicious food.

Year 6 German Easter Activities

In Germany, the Osterbaum tradition celebrates spring by decorating tree branches with colourful, hand-painted eggs. Year 6 students have joined the fun by creating their own beautiful egg designs, which are now on display in our very own Pedare Osterbaum. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the Easter holiday and the start of a new season!

Year 5 Camp

Year 5 students had the most fantastic camp experience last week, staying at Port Hughes and adventuring to Moonta Bay. The weather couldn’t have been better, providing the perfect backdrop for a high-energy getaway.

For many, the trip was a series of “firsts.” Students took on the challenge of setting up their own campsites and experiencing the thrill of sleeping in a tent and cooking their own pasta dinners over camp stoves.

Students loved snorkelling, fishing, Moonta Splash Park and exploring the rock pools on the beach.

Catch Up in Catford

On Friday, 20 March, the new Senior Learning Centre was electric as we hosted the Classes of 2020–2025 for a “Catch up in Catford” Old Scholars event.

Between the great food and the even better company, the evening served as a fantastic reminder of the lasting bonds formed within the College. Seeing so many familiar faces return was a highlight for staff and alumni alike. 

To parents of current students, this event beautifully illustrates the lifelong community your children are joining. Old Scholars are always welcome back at Pedare. Whether it has been one year or twenty since graduation, we take great pride in watching alumni navigate the world and love providing a “home base” for them to reconnect. 

We look forward to seeing Old Scholars back on campus again soon!

Tea Tree Gully Anglican

Tea Tree Gully Anglican Church is a group of Christians who seek to serve Jesus in everything we do. Whether you are just visiting or looking for a Christian home, we aim to be a loving and supportive family for you.

On Sundays, we meet at the church at 8.30 am, 10.00 am and 6.00 pm. If you want to discover what the bible says Christianity is all about, join one of the numerous weekly bible discussion groups, or want to find out about our Kids Club (R-6) from 3:30-5pm and Youth group (Y7-12) from 7-9pm that both operate on a weekly basis during school terms.

Gully Church (Tea Tree Gully Uniting) – Banksia Markets

Gully Church hosts the ‘local and friendly’ Banksia Markets on the first Saturday of each month from 8.30 am to 1.00 pm at 600 Milne Road, Banksia Park. Stalls inside the hall and in the car park include produce, fresh fruit and vegetables, jewellery, tools, bric-à-brac and lots more.

Golden Grove Uniting Church

Golden Grove Uniting Church, corner of Crouch and One Tree Hill Road, Golden Grove, has a traditional service at 10 am on a Sunday.  Also, on the second and fourth Sunday of the month, we have a cafe-style church, a relaxed contemporary worship service at 6 pm in the Church hall.

Café Youth is a fun, interactive program for young people ages 14 and up looking to engage in topics of faith. Café Youth sessions start with a fun 30-minute activity based on the theme for the night, then followed by “Talk Time”, during which the group discusses a topic of faith while enjoying delicious snacks, refreshments and pizza! The cost for each session is $5.
