Commencement of the Academic Year
It was wonderful to welcome students for the commencement of the academic year last week. Very pleasing to also welcome so many parents to Junior and Middle School Information Evenings earlier this week. One of our central beliefs about an exceptional education is that relationships are at the core. Strong connection between students and teachers, complemented by regular communication between school and home, are imperative. If you need any support or have any questions, please ensure you reach out and allow staff to support you as required.
First Day of Term 1 – Tuesday, 27 January
On Thursday, we recognised the highest performing students from last year’s Year 12 cohort. Those students gaining an ATAR in the 90s, along with their families, joined us at a special assembly to formally recognise their achievements. My thanks to all parents and staff who contributed so significantly to the success experienced by the Year 12 graduating class. We wish all graduates every success and happiness as they embark on their post-school journeys, and look forward to following their progress with great interest.
Our theme for 2026 is Called to Contribute. We believe that true meaning, purpose and fulfilment is found not in what we aspire to store away for ourselves, but in serving others. We’ve asked students to consider what they want their legacy to be this year; to ask not what their family, school, friends or communities can do for them, but how they can contribute positively to those around them. We look forward to exploring this theme in depth throughout the year.
Old Scholars at 90+ Academic Assembly – Thursday, 5 February
Bishop Bradly Billings elected as 11th Anglican Archbishop of Adelaide
The Anglican Diocese of Adelaide is pleased to announce the election of The Right Reverend Dr Bradly Billings as its 11th Archbishop. Dr Billings, currently an Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Melbourne, brings to Adelaide a wealth of experience in parish ministry, theological education and senior church governance. He has served as an Assistant Bishop since 2016, most recently as the Bishop for the Oodthenong area, which covers the northern and western growth areas of Greater Melbourne and extends to include Geelong. We look forward to welcoming Dr Billings when he takes the role as Archbishop in coming months.

This year marks a significant chapter in the teaching and learning journey at Pedare. Following our decision last year to move away from the IB program, staff began the year by continuing to develop and refine our new curriculum. Aligned with the Australian Curriculum, our new program is distinctly “Pedare,” underpinned by our Guiding Principles for Learning: Thrive, Enrich, Empower, Connect and Belong. These principles serve as the foundation for the teaching and learning environment across all year levels.
It was wonderful to welcome students back across the College, from Reception, who are busy adjusting to new routines and life at school, to the Year 12 cohort, who have made an excellent start to their final year, enjoying full use of the new Catford Building.
This week, we held the 90+ Academic Assembly to recognise the academic achievements of the Class of 2025. We celebrated College Dux, Callum R, and those who achieved an ATAR above 90.
As I shared in my assembly address, the Class of 2025 helped shape a culture grounded in perseverance, curiosity and a strong sense of belonging. These values were lived daily in classrooms, rehearsals, sporting teams and many other aspects of College life, being exceptional role models through the standards they upheld and set for those following in their footsteps.
The Class of 2026 were presented with their badges to formally commission them for their final year. We look forward to seeing all that they will achieve this year as leaders of Pedare.
Within the Middle School, we are pleased to welcome approximately 140 new students. This group includes both continuing students from Junior School and those joining the Pedare community for the first time.
The adjustment to Middle School routines has been seamless. It was great to connect with those of you who attended the Year 6 & 7 Parent Information Night on Tuesday, 3 Feb. Strengthening the partnership between school and home is a vital component of the Middle School journey. We look forward to many more opportunities to connect with the community throughout the year.

First Nations Immersion Tour – Cape York 2026
We are excited to announce that in November 2026, students in Year 9-11 will have the extraordinary opportunity to travel to the far north of Australia for a First Nations Immersion in Cape York.
This life-changing journey is run in partnership with Red Earth, an organisation dedicated to connecting young Australians with First Nations communities in a way that is respectful, meaningful and safe. By partnering with Red Earth, we ensure students have access to private Homelands that are otherwise closed to the public, allowing for authentic engagement with the world’s oldest living culture.

– Duration: 7 Days, 6 Nights
– Location: Cape York (Yungee Homelands and the Daintree Region)
The immersion is carefully designed to balance deep cultural learning with the natural wonder of the Far North. Students will spend several nights living on the private Homelands of the Yungee people. Under the guidance of Traditional Owners, they will learn about the rich history and modern realities of life in remote communities. Whether a community project, hiking to sacred sites, throwing a fishing line in a local creek or sharing stories around the campfire, the goal is to foster genuine personal connections.
The second half of the journey focuses on the stunning ecosystems of the region. Students will snorkel the Great Barrier Reef alongside a First Nations guide, gaining a unique perspective on the reef’s cultural and environmental significance. They will also venture Mossman Gorge within the Daintree Rainforest and learn about the ancient flora and fauna from those who have lived in harmony with the rainforest for millennia.

We are officially kicking off this opportunity on Monday, 9 February. Red Earth representatives will be at Pedare to speak directly with students in Years 9-11, sharing stories of the region and explaining what they can expect from this unique adventure.
Parent Information Session (Online)
We invite parents to join us for an online information evening to learn more about the logistics and the profound impact of this program.

It has been heartwarming to see staff and students re-enter the school grounds this past fortnight. The start of a new year feels like opening a brand-new book, each page is something new. New classrooms, new things to learn and of course, new people to meet. We warmly welcome new families to the Pedare community. We have new students from Reception to Year 5 and are extremely grateful that you are partnering with us in this journey.
We also extend a warm welcome to the newest staff member, Ms Monique Ollenbuttel (Year 5), as well as continuing staff in different roles, Mr Michael Raymond (Physical Education) and Ms Georgina Saunders (Year 1).
The spirit of connection was felt this week at Parent Information Night. Thank you to the families who joined to meet the dedicated teachers who are caring for and educating your children this year. At Pedare, we believe students thrive when home and school work together, and it is a joy to foster that partnership with you all.

It was a privilege to stand before the community today at the Welcome and Pedare Student Voices (PSV) Assembly to celebrate Junior School students. We officially recognised 2026 PSV Representatives, Junior School Captains and Community Captains, who will serve as the vital link between the classroom and the College community. We look forward to seeing new representatives foster their leadership spirit and make a difference in not only our community but beyond.

HEAD OF SENIOR SCHOOL

2026 is officially underway, and we extend a warm welcome to all students and families, especially those joining Senior School for the first time. It has been a privilege to see students return with such energy and focus.
It has been a highlight to welcome cohorts into the brand-new senior learning space, Catford. Seeing students utilise this state-of-the-art facility has been wonderful; it is already serving as a vibrant hub for collaboration, independent study and purposeful learning.
First Day in Catford Building – Tuesday-Wednesday, 27-28 January
This week held a significant milestone for the Year 12s, who received their Year 12 badges at the 90+ Academic Assembly. These badges signify their transition into the final chapter of their schooling and their responsibility as leaders and role models for Year 10 and 11 students. In this spirit of leadership, we also had the pleasure of formally inducting Oscar E and Fiona C as our Academic Captains for 2026, and we look forward to the impact they will have on learning culture.
Year 12s at 90+ Academic Assembly – Thursday, 5 February
To further support seniors and their families, we look forward to the Welcome to Year 12 Information Night on Tuesday, 10 February (6:00 pm – 7:30 pm). This event aims to strengthen the vital connection between school and home, ensuring families feel supported as we walk this path together.
I am incredibly optimistic about the year ahead, for learning, connection and collective success. Wishing you all a fantastic start to 2026!
FRUITFUL REFLECTION
God is our Anchor.
Hebrews 6:19, from the Bible, reminds us that “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure”. This theme will guide the spiritual journey across the College this year. As students navigate 2026, from Reception students starting their journey to Year 12s preparing for their final exams, there will be times of calm and also moments of change, uncertainty or “stormy weather.”
An anchor does not stop the storm, but it keeps the vessel from drifting. Similarly, our faith in God provides the stability and security we need to navigate life’s joys and challenges. God enjoys our thankfulness when all is going well. Equally, He grounds us when things feel uncertain and holds us fast when the tides turn.
This year, we invite the College community to hold onto this hope. No matter what the year brings, we can be confident that we remain grounded, supported and securely held in God’s love.

40 Year Gala Celebration – Save the Date
Get ready to celebrate four decades of Pedare in style! We are thrilled to announce the 40 Year Gala Celebration at Adelaide Oval on Saturday, 9 May.
Dust off your dancing shoes, book the babysitter and gather friends for a night of nostalgia and celebration. This is a night to reminisce, reconnect and make new memories. You won’t want to miss it!
SACE Information Night and Medical Sciences Information Night
Parents/Caregivers are cordially invited to Pedare’s combined SACE Information Session and an Introduction to Medical Sciences Session. This event is designed for families with children in the Senior School, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the processes, expectations and opportunities available through the SACE and the Senior School.

Session 1: 6:00 pm – 6:45 pm SACE Information
For families with a child undertaking senior studies, this session will introduce information regarding SACE, subject selections, ATAR and VET. We will discuss pathways available to students at Pedare. It is highly recommended for families with a child in Years 10 -11.
Session 2: 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm Introduction to Medical Sciences
This session will offer valuable insights into the field of Medicine by engaging presenters from Adelaide University and Flinders University. Guest speakers will provide opportunities for families to gain a deeper understanding of a future in Medicine. It is open to families of any year level interested in exploring medical sciences as a potential pathway for their child.

Junior School Stay & Play
Building strong family connections is at the heart of everything we do at Pedare. This term, we’re bringing the Junior School community together for a series of after-school “Stay & Play” events. Each year level will have its own dedicated afternoon to relax, play and socialise. It’s a wonderful, informal way to meet other parents in your child’s year level while the students enjoy some extra time together.

40th Anniversary Pins
To continue our 40th Anniversary celebrations, we were delighted to gift students commemorative pins during their first week back! Teaching staff are already sporting theirs, and we now invite students to wear their pins with pride on their blazers or formal uniforms.
It is a joy to share this milestone with the entire Pedare community, and we look forward to many more celebrations throughout the year!
WELLBEING MATTERS
School Transitions
Whether it is starting school, moving up to a higher year level or embarking on a journey through Middle and Senior School, there is no doubt that any school transition is a very exciting time for children and parents. It means your children are growing up!
However, transitioning is an ongoing process. It continues long after students have entered their new environment and they may encounter difficulties at multiple different stages. These stressors may appear as anxiety or frustration, and can result in negative or disruptive behaviours. These behaviours can become problematic, making the transitioning process more difficult for children and parents.
In the below edition of School TV, parents will learn practical strategies to assist their child during the transition process and reduce stress and anxiety levels.
LEARNING HIGHLIGHT
Year 6 German Schultüte Presentations
Each year here at Pedare, we have a tradition of handing out Schultüte (School cones) to each student in the first couple of weeks at school.
The ‘Schultüte’ is a 150 year old tradition in Germany. Students receive a decorated cardboard cone (often the same size as themselves) on their very first day at school from their parents. The cone contains sweet surprises, toys and school supplies. The tradition came about to help students enjoy their first day and to acknowledge the beginning of their education.

Year 6 German Schultüte Presentations – Tuesday, 3 February
Year 8 Chinese Online Lesson with Sister School
In Week 2, Year 8 Chinese students took part in an online lesson with our sister school, Jinan Middle School, in China, providing an authentic opportunity to use Chinese in a real communicative context. Through guided interaction, students introduced themselves, exchanged information and responded to questions using familiar language structures.
The lesson supported the development of students’ communicative competence and intercultural understanding, as they compared aspects of school life in Australia and China and adapted their language for a real audience. Students demonstrated confidence, engagement and respect while interacting with their peers.
Beyond the curriculum, this experience showed students how language can build connection, understanding and a sense of belonging in a global community.

Year 8 Chinese Online Lesson with Sister School – Monday, 2 February
Community Spirit Shines at Eldergreen and Surrey Breakfasts
We are delighted to once again host Community Breakfasts for Middle and Senior School students and their families. These mornings are a wonderful tradition at Pedare, offering a chance to celebrate unique Community cultures and enjoy a bright start to the day together.
We kicked things off this week with the Eldergreen and Surrey breakfasts. The weather was beautiful as the Eagles and Sharks turned up in droves to share a meal and a chat. It was fantastic to see such a strong turnout and a vibrant sense of community in the Wattle Cafe and Courtyard.
We look forward to keeping the momentum going as we host Brooklyn, Petworth and Hillcott next week, followed by Greenwith the week after. A huge thank you to all the students, families and staff who made this week’s events such a success!

NEWS, UPDATES AND RESULTS
The Pedare Extra-curricular Portal is the central hub for information and links to our Sports and Clubs program. Regularly updated, it provides the latest news, announcements, results and important updates on Pedare’s extra-curricular activities and events.
Tennis SA 10U National Development Squad
We celebrate Adelaide B (Year 5), who has been selected for the Tennis SA 10U National Development Squad, marking her as one of the top emerging talents in South Australia. Her dedication showed during the South Australia vs Victoria match in Mt Gambier a few months ago, where she represented SA with pride.
She has been an amazing ambassador, and we wish her the best for her future development.
National Track and Field School Sports Australia Competition
Last November, Oliver B (Year 5) competed in the National Track and Field School Sports Australia Competition in Canberra. He proudly represented South Australia against exceptional competition, taking his athletics to the next level.
He participated in the 10 Year Old Boys Combined Event (100m, Shot Put, 800m and long jump), discus and the 4X100m relay team, finishing 9th overall. Oliver had an amazing time, learned a lot about himself, and is already training hard and is determined to make the SA team again next year.

Tea Tree Gully Anglican
Tea Tree Gully Anglican Church is a group of Christians who seek to serve Jesus in everything we do. Whether you are just visiting or looking for a Christian home, we aim to be a loving and supportive family for you.
On Sundays, we meet at the church at 8.30 am, 10.00 am and 6.00 pm. If you want to discover what the bible says Christianity is all about, join one of the numerous weekly bible discussion groups, or want to find out about our Kids Club (R-6) from 3:30-5pm and Youth group (Y7-12) from 7-9pm that both operate on a weekly basis during school terms.

Gully Church (Tea Tree Gully Uniting) – Banksia Markets
Gully Church hosts the ‘local and friendly’ Banksia Markets on the first Saturday of each month from 8.30 am to 1.00 pm at 600 Milne Road, Banksia Park. Stalls inside the hall and in the car park include produce, fresh fruit and vegetables, jewellery, tools, bric-à-brac and lots more.

Golden Grove Uniting Church
Golden Grove Uniting Church, corner of Crouch and One Tree Hill Road, Golden Grove, has a traditional service at 10 am on a Sunday. Also, on the second and fourth Sunday of the month, we have a cafe-style church, a relaxed contemporary worship service at 6 pm in the Church hall.
Café Youth is a fun, interactive program for young people ages 14 and up looking to engage in topics of faith. Café Youth sessions start with a fun 30-minute activity based on the theme for the night, then followed by “Talk Time”, during which the group discusses a topic of faith while enjoying delicious snacks, refreshments and pizza! The cost for each session is $5.
